I’m excited to announce the launch of an online community where we can join up and discuss all things graphic design, share art for feedback and get to know our fellow design community. After some initial research, I decided to setup a Discord server (similar to Slack) for this purpose. It’s easy to access and available across desktop and mobile devices.
What’s Happening in the Chat
- We’ll share live stream details, tutorial launches, product releases and more in the #announcements channel.
- Be sure to add a little story about yourself and what you’re currently up to in the industry in #intros channel so we can all get to know you.
- Share your designs for feedback in #design-critiques and how-to or InDesign q’s in #ask-a-design-pro.
How to Join the Server:
- Click this LINK
- Register an email, nickname, and preferred password
- Confirm your email
- Chat it up!
- (Optional) Download the Desktop app. (Or if you use: Android / Mac / iOS)
How Does Discord Work?
If you’re familiar with how Slack works, Discord will feel very similar with some added features. You can access Discord via a web browser or apps available on desktop and mobile devices. Note that Push to Talk features only work via the desktop app.
Below is an overview of some features available in the chat server including how to submit our designs for critique and some general FAQs.
Voice & Text Channels: Clicking on a Text Channel will allow you to see that channel’s chat and talk in it accordingly. Clicking on a Voice Channel will enable voice chat. To disconnect from a Voice Channel, either click on another Voice Channel to move to that chat or click the Disconnect button at the bottom of the chat panel.
Users can mute and deafen themselves. Users are also able to mute another user by clicking their name, then the microphone on the right of the popup. User Settings can also help a user choose an avatar, set a key binding for their microphone, and more.
How to Submit Images for Critique
I’m most excited for the critique room! Constructive critique is an important part of growing your skills as a designer and now you can get feedback directly from the Design Procademy community. There is a dedicated channel just for this purpose where you can drag and drop or link to images of your latest work. The community can offer their feedback as well as yours truly! We’ll also host periodic scheduled critique and chat sessions for a more lively conversation. Keep an eye out for design competitions and special projects to build your portfolio too.
Who can join the chat?
The chat server is open to anyone in the design community. We will be rolling out additional premium levels with added bonuses and permissions for designers wanting a few extra goodies and more private chats.
Do we have to only talk about graphic design?
We are an education community focused in graphic design. It’s preferred to stay on topic however, other topics could include business development, creative arts, education, degrees, how to apply for jobs in a creative field, Photoshop, photography, InDesign, etc. You don’at have to only talk about graphic design.
Isn’t Discord for gamers?
Yes, Discord is dedicated to the gaming community, but it works great for any community wanting to share content and chat. The text and voice chats make Discord an ideal solution for our community and many of the features are adaptable to various industries.
Can I be a moderator?
Right now I’ll reach out to those in our pixel fam directly to help moderate. If you are interested please join the server and PM your inquiry to @Nicki.
If you need help or have questions about the new chat server, please leave them in a comment below.
See you in the chat!
